Close Encounter

Close Encounter brings together French artist and draughtsman Jérôme Zonder and Swiss sculptor Jan Steenman in a focused dialogue on portraiture, the body, and material presence. Zonder’s small-format drawings, made with pencil, graphite, and charcoal, hover between likeness, caricature, and abstraction, while his fingertips leave visible traces in the pigment. Steenman’s ceramic sculpture Numinous explores a hidden human presence absorbed within form. Together, their works shift between recognition and estrangement, rewarding close and sustained looking.

Lola Jay investigates memory, imagery and the ways we reconstruct our past. Working at the intersection of painting and visual culture, she produces oil paintings and painted-objects that reinterpret family photographs, film stills and found images. Her compositions borrow photographic framing to isolate gestures and everyday fragments, questioning how selection, framing and repetition transform recollection. The exhibition examines the porous boundary between intimate and collective memory, showing how images do not merely preserve the past but reshape and remake it. Lola Jay is based in Geneva.

Jean-Étienne Liotard’s portraits of the imperial family, notably Marie‑Antoinette, include eleven drawings widely regarded as masterpieces. This project examines the identification of the sitter children and the works’ provenance through a cross-disciplinary investigation. In collaboration with the University of Oxford, the Idiap research institute and the School of Criminal Sciences at the University of Lausanne, historians of art and specialists in the eighteenth century join AI researchers and forensic experts to reveal new insights into authorship and history.

13 October – 15 November

Dance First Think Later brings together choreographers, performers, visual artists and videographers to investigate convergences between dance, performance and moving image. The exhibition combines installations, video works, sculptures, drawings, scores and archival materials alongside durational performances.
Through embodied gestures and staged movement, the programme examines how bodies register history, politics, migration, gender, urban space, ecology and technology. Curated by O. Kaeser, the project foregrounds relational practices that reveal and question the choreographies shaping social and spatial life.
