5 – 10 May

Il était une autre fois

Presented by Les AMAZONES à la Julienne, this satirical comedy upends fairy-tale logic to expose social conventions. A distinguished lecturer’s attempt to rehabilitate classic tales unravels as a sarcastic Witch dismantles founding myths, and heroines from Cinderella to Snow White rebel, bore themselves or awaken sexually. Mixing social satire, dark comedy and biting poetry, the piece stages wild reversals where prey become predators, yielding a hilarious yet cruel portrait of a post–fairy‑tale world that unsettles as it amuses.

About the play
1942. France is under occupation. Seven friends gather to celebrate Sophie’s birthday—until two German officers are shot beneath their windows. Kaubach, a Nazi commander, forces the guests to make an unthinkable choice: to designate two hostages among themselves.
Thus begins a harrowing struggle for survival. By confronting the depths of human nature, the play invites us to question which side we would have chosen.

Directed by Jacques Gay, this vocal celebration gathers soloists Fabrice Coccitto and Thibaut Trouche, pianist Raphaëlle Farman and the Comédie Lyrique choir to traverse a repertoire spanning musical theatre, French variété and jazz. Selections range from Aznavour and Voulzy to Queen, ABBA and Sinatra, reimagined with warm ensemble singing and intimate piano textures. The staging favors close harmonies, rhythmic verve and nostalgic timbres, inviting listeners into a convivial yet nuanced sound world.

21 April – 10 May

Chekhov’s Ivanov follows Nikolai Ivanov, a middling Russian landowner crushed by debt and by the slow decline of his wife, Anna Petrovna, who is dying of tuberculosis. Across four acts, his inertia curdles into melancholy and self-destruction, swinging between biting comedy and harrowing despair. Written in a ten-day burst in 1887, when Chekhov was only twenty-seven, the play crackles with youthful urgency as tragedy and humor intertwine.

Director–actor Jean-François Sivadier infuses this new staging with his distinctive theatrical energy, pairing veteran performers with fresh faces to reignite the play’s original heat. Echoing Gustav Mahler’s dictum that “tradition is not the worship of ashes, but the preservation of fire,” the production seeks to keep Chekhov’s raw, combustible spirit blazing on today’s stage.

Conductor Zofia Kiniorska leads the AMAA Symphony Orchestra through a programme balancing Italian lyricism and Romantic drama. Pianist Zijian Wei, Geneva Competition 2022 laureate, features in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.2, delivering poised virtuosity, while Andreas Bottaro brings lyrical intensity on violin in selected works. Excerpts from Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake and Puccini’s symphonic prelude weave orchestral color with balletic textures, complemented by dancers from CPMDT — Emilie Meeus and Luca Scaduto — who add a visual, kinetic layer to the musical narrative.

21 April – 10 May

Based on the Jekyll myth, this theatrical adaptation examines metamorphosis as both physical and social, probing identity, gender and the boundary between good and male/female. Stark black-and-white staging and chiaroscuro lighting evoke twilight and old horror films, while a persistent, slicing fog thickens the atmosphere. The venerable Dr Jekyll’s unsettling experiments unfold in a late-19th-century London laboratory, and his circle is drawn into mounting anguish as transformations accelerate.

To conclude its season in style, GECA welcomes Sampa The Great, a Zambian hip-hop icon.
