Hidden Treasures of Graphic Arts

Genevan artist Jean-Étienne Liotard is central to this selection of graphic treasures: prints, drawings, pastel portraits and rare illustrated books. The presentation highlights Liotard’s cosmopolitan practice — an itinerant career across Europe and the Ottoman Empire — and examines how social status shaped portrait execution. Through pastels and works on paper, it contrasts European and Ottoman visual codes, considers unidentified sitters, and reveals how technique and medium negotiate identity, status and cultural exchange in eighteenth-century portraiture.

Swiss artist Seline Burn presents a series of about a dozen paintings that explore liminal territories where identities, emotions and relationships transform. Figures in motion, in relation or in passage emerge from an omnipresent water, which functions as memory, inner landscape and dream space. Recurring colours weave a sensitive thread through contrasts and tensions across the works. The exhibition encourages contemplation of ambivalence and the possibility of finding forms of belonging within transient states.

Echo Chamber is an immersive, interactive and participatory exhibition that probes self-image and perception. Housed in a contained space, it stages a sequence of installations and collaborative artworks that invite visitors to engage, modify and reflect on representations of identity. The show extends into a virtual environment, using audiovisual and sensor-driven elements to examine how images circulate, transform and are interpreted—raising questions about gaze, agency and consent in contemporary visual culture.

10 October – 21 November

What Connects Us brings together Susanna Bauer, Michele Landel and Hannah Schmider in a collective exhibition that examines encounters between nature, memory and craft. Delicate crochet, embroidered photographs on reclaimed bed linens and figurative wooden sculptures form a quiet vocabulary that probes human–animal relationships and domestic ecologies. The works emphasise material histories and gesture, inviting careful looking and conversations about care, fragility and the traces left by interspecies bonds.

Opening: 10 October, 11:00 – 15:00

Permanente exhibition

Rousseau was born right here in 1712. Today, his birthplace pairs a permanent journey through his ideas with a lively programme devoted to contemporary literature. Philosophy, freedom, education, nature: centuries later, the questions raised inside these walls still feel remarkably current.

Big Bangs, tiny particles and some very big questions. CERN’s Science Gateway makes particle physics surprisingly tangible through hands-on experiments, real scientific objects, and immersive installations. You don’t need a physics degree — curiosity will do just fine.

Permanent exhibition

Two centuries of Geneva history told through uniforms, photographs, posters, equipment, and personal objects. Rather than simply lining up military artefacts, the museum places them back into the events and stories that shaped the canton from the Restoration to the present day.
