Gender Is a Weapon: Liberalism, Difference, and US Counterinsurgency

Free, Booking Required

Elizabeth Mesok presents a sobering study of how liberal military inclusion reshapes gendered power during imperial occupations. Drawing on historical and contemporary analysis, the book examines the US military’s reliance on women—particularly Black women and women of colour—and how gender difference was weaponized through all-women counterinsurgency teams framed as humanitarian. Mesok explores the violent paradoxes of service and forces readers to confront liberalism’s promises and the erasures of harm that accompany them.
