Michel Pastoureau, professor emeritus (EPHE, EHESS and École des chartes), is a historian and latinist specialising in the history of animals, colours and symbols. In this lecture he examines the place of the bear in European history: its former status as a sacred animal, its gradual devaluation in favour of the lion as ‘king of beasts’, and its twentieth‑century comeback as a stuffed toy. Pastoureau highlights symbolic shifts and cultural meanings across centuries.
