When a Colombian Symphonic Band Enters the HEM

Mancipe Angela, a doctoral assistant affiliated with the Centre des Cultures at HEM, presents research from a collaborative project at HEM Genève. She examines the processes of transmission, negotiation and intercultural dialogue that arise when a Colombian symphonic band engages with a Swiss higher music institution. The talk explores how certain musical practices resist established categories and the implications for pedagogy and intercultural exchange.

The Department of Ancient Studies at the Faculty of Humanities (UNIGE) is offering a series of public lectures dedicated to interactions, exchanges, and cultural dynamics in the ancient world. Anna Desraux (actress and musician) or Jeanne Mermet (engineer and musician), together with Gabriel Cotte (limnologist and science communicator), combine artistic and scientific perspectives to guide participants through embodied explorations of lake dynamics.

The workshop examines Lake Geneva’s currents and prevailing winds through music and movement, inviting participants to become a drop of water and follow regional flows. It explores how wind-driven patterns shape circulation, fostering sensory understanding of limnological processes and collective motion.

22 August – 10 October

Anna Desraux (actress–musician), Jeanne Mermet (engineer–musician) and Gabriel Cotte (limnologist and science communicator) combine performance, technical practice and aquatic science to guide participants.

Drawing on scientific data, the workshop investigates the lake’s breathing rhythms through guided breathing exercises, verb-based prompts and collaborative songwriting. Participants translate limnological patterns into poetic verbs and melodies, then develop lyrics and simple musical settings that reveal the lake’s vitality and temporal dynamics.
