Imperial Ball – Boléro by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui & Damien Jalet

“Bal Impérial – Boléro” seamlessly blends an imperial waltz with Ravel’s mesmerizing Boléro. Created by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Damien Jalet, this work delves into the social and political roots of dance. The first segment, “Bal Impérial,” marks the bicentennial of Johann Strauss by juxtaposing Viennese music with Japanese percussion, all set in an evocative stage design and costumes by Tim Yip. The second segment, “Boléro,” revisits the 2013 choreography, presenting an intense, visceral dance to Ravel’s dramatic crescendo, enriched by artistic influences from Marina Abramović.
