Georges Haldas: Encounter with Old Geneva

For this opening evening of the Lectures en résonance season, Espace Saint-Gervais pays tribute to Geneva writer Georges Haldas. Joël Waefler reads from Haldas’s evocative pages on Geneva’s café culture, while Miriam Fernández accompanies the text on guitar. Together, word and music conjure a vanished city of popular bistros, familiar faces and everyday life, all filtered through Haldas’s humane gaze and his gift for finding the pulse of “real life” in the ordinary.

Two incandescent works meet in a programme of ardent passion and doomed desire. Janáček’s Zápisník zmizelého (The Diary of One Who Disappeared), here in Laurent Cuniot’s arrangement, stages the feverish confession of a young peasant enthralled by a gypsy; Manuel de Falla’s El amor brujo (1915 version) conjures Andalusian rites, flamenco rhythms and orchestral heat. Isabelle Druet and tenor Petr Nekoranec lead the vocal drama, with the Orchestre de Chambre de Genève in a co-production marking de Falla’s 150th anniversary.
