Another World Is Possible – When Communities Make a Difference

Booking Required

Action de Carême presents a pair of documentary shorts that use intimate testimony and observational camerawork to examine gender, food sovereignty and climate resilience. The first film traces shifting gender roles across Guatemala, Burkina Faso, the Philippines and Switzerland, exploring how dialogue and local solutions can transform power relations and advance the right to food. The second follows community efforts to adopt improved cookstoves, reducing wood use, deforestation and respiratory risk. Subtitled in French, the films favor textured, human-scale portraits.

Lars von Trier’s radical early film, the second work emerging from the Dogme95 movement, stages a provocative experiment that blurs performance and life. Shot with a stripped-down aesthetic and handheld immediacy, it follows a group who deliberately act ‘idiotic’ to unsettle social norms. The film interrogates marginalization, spectatorship and ethical boundaries, trading polished craft for raw intensity. Its explicit scenes and confrontational tone challenge viewers while offering a stark meditation on freedom and shame. ! Warning !: This film contains explicit scenes that may offend the audience’s sensibilities. 18+

Ciel Sourdeau’s eight-minute, seventeen-second video unfolds as a subversive tutorial: part gore, part experimental film, it repurposes pedagogical forms into an improvised, transgressive bricolage. Mixed by Adrien Kessler, the piece layers tactile sound and rough-edged visuals to probe bodies, identity and the limits of instruction. Its stripped, confrontational aesthetic alternates shock and dark humour, inviting a re-examination of learning rituals and the politics of representation through intimate, unsettling imagery.

Nicolas Roeg’s first feature follows a brother and sister stranded in the Australian desert who must learn to survive after encountering a young Aboriginal man on a walkabout. A major work of 1970s British and Australian cinema, the film contrasts Western and Aboriginal worldviews while offering a striking visual meditation on landscape, survival and dislocation. Roeg’s elliptical editing and luminous cinematography make the narrative an atmospheric, sometimes haunting study of cultural encounter and loss.
