The Grand History of Opera

Professor Oduris, an eminent scholar of opera, condenses four centuries of lyric art into a compact, illustrated lecture-performance. Combining historical insight with theatrical storytelling, the presentation explores key moments, stylistic shifts and pivotal works that shaped opera from its origins to the modern stage. A prima donna and pianist join the talk, transforming chronology into a lively odyssey that highlights composers, vocal traditions and dramatic innovations. Designed for emerging professionals and recent graduates, this workshop explores puppetry through the creation of a short performance. Four to five young artists are supported through a guided process from idea to stage, with mentorship in direction, dramaturgy and construction. Participants develop a compact work presented at a public work-in-progress showcase. Éclats! gathers leading francophone writers in short, staged confrontations that examine contemporary issues. Each evening pairs two authors — Giuliano Da Empoli and Hugo Micheron; Asma Mhalla and Hervé Le Tellier; Esther Teillard and Frédéric Beigbeder; Kamel Daoud and François‑Henri Désérable — in moderated discussions investigating global disorder, the ethics of AI, gender and style, and migration and storytelling. Artistic direction is by François‑Henri Désérable. Capacity is limited to 80 spectators per evening.

Saturday 6 June, 10:30 & 13:30

Marie Ducaté, an artist trained at the Beaux-Arts de Lille, moved from painting to ceramics, glass and textiles and now works with tracing paper (calque).

This hands-on workshop explores the many facets of tracing and mixed media, examining techniques across calque, fabric, ceramic and glass. Participants investigate material interactions, experimental processes and compositional approaches while developing practical creative methods to integrate tracing into personal practice.

30 May & 6 June, 13:30

Ainhoa Cayuso, ceramic artist, leads the sculpting and painting sessions, while the NoOps association facilitates a hands-on dismantling workshop to source electronic components.

Across three linked workshops participants disassemble vintage devices, model them in self‑hardening clay, and apply colour to create sculptural memories. The programme examines material reuse, creative reuse of electronic detritus, and the cultural significance of tech nostalgia through practical making and discussion.

Saturday 6 June, 14:00

Malandro, artist and illustrator, leads a practical workshop focused on observational sketching and illustration. He demonstrates quick-study techniques to capture form, gesture and mood with economy and expressiveness.

After a brief tour of the exhibition that inspired the session, participants explore cafés as motifs, practising composition, line work and shading. The workshop examines how simple marks can reveal atmosphere, social interaction and the character of everyday objects.
