Afterwork Book Club : Reading Differently

A welcoming book club that explores how reading can be experienced in new ways. Each meeting offers thematic discussions, rapid book pitches and practical writing workshops designed to stimulate imagination and critical reading. Sessions investigate narrative tropes, celebrate disruptive contemporary literature and propose exercises to develop creative writing practice. Participants exchange perspectives, deconstruct genres and discover new approaches to reading, interpretation and collective creation.

18 and 25 March

This two‑afternoon workshop teaches upcycling and basic soldering as participants build creatures from recycled electronic components. Attendees learn soldering techniques, circuit basics and hands‑on assembly while developing personal narratives for their creations. The sessions explore how naming and classification shape our understanding of living forms, prompting reflection on taxonomy, creativity and the relationship between DIY practice, science and art.

This workshop explores the traditional process of assembling a herbarium specimen, inspired by Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s collections. Participants learn scientific techniques for pressing and mounting dried plants on old paper, practice botanical labelling and nomenclature, and select specimens to create a personal herbarium sheet. The session examines preservation methods, identification principles and the historical context of Rousseau’s approach, combining practical skills with scientific insight to produce a lasting botanical object.

Share a pizza while exploring bold, off‑beat novels chosen for curious 11–15 year‑olds. Through playful games and quick quizzes, participants learn to state their views, sharpen how they read, and name their feelings. Discussion is encouraged in an open, friendly atmosphere: it’s more than swapping favourites — it’s a first step into debating ideas. Sessions are led by editor, bookseller and cultural animator Bertille de Crevoisier.
