The Shadow of the Sun

Béchir Boussandel presents a body of work that unfolds from shadow and the heat of desert palettes. Through paintings, sculptures and delicate bird watercolours populated by anonymous figures, he examines displacement, crossing and survival within North African desert landscapes. The pieces use ochres, reds and material contrast to evoke memory and shifting identities, employing an atmospheric visual language that balances figuration and absence.

Swiss artist Pierre André Ferrand presents a restrained body of work that examines the conditions of image-making and the illusionistic nature of painting. The show brings together oils on canvas and works on paper, employing a deliberate economy of means, pared visual codes, and an intimate awareness of artistic limits. Swiss-based artist John M Armleder assembles a playful yet probing exhibition that reconfigures everyday objects and artistic tropes. Works range from self-portraits and floral bouquets to a monumental disco ball installation and taxidermied animals, combining found and crafted elements.
The presentation stages a dialogue between Armleder’s pieces and the institution’s collection, interrogating display conventions, spectacle and the border between ornament and artwork. Through juxtaposition and scale, the show asks how context reshapes meaning and perception.

30 September – 11 October

Ségolène Romier revisits her practice as a filmmaker while opening a new chapter that foregrounds drawing and material experimentation. Her films, presented across a cluster of televisions, form a living retrospective populated by characters, objects and bodies. Drawing, long confined to sculptural preparation, moves to the fore on cardboard, producing fragmented forms and a kaleidoscopic self‑portrait in which the body appears in pieces between representation and disappearance. The exhibition contemplates passage, creative continuity and the shifting modalities of image and object.

An inter-institutional conversation examines how perspectives and narratives around female and male nudity are constructed. The programme highlights the work of Sylvia Sleigh, whose practice reconsiders portraiture and the nude through the lens of 1970s feminism, subverting conventional viewing positions. Alongside collection-based displays tracing a shift from the heroic to the erotic gaze, the presentation juxtaposes representational strategies and visual languages to reveal how gender, power and desire are staged and perceived.
