Frank Martin’s opera La Tempête, after Shakespeare with a libretto by August Wilhelm von Schlegel and Johann Ludwig Tieck, returns in a new French-language production. Conductor Thierry Fischer leads the score while director Netia Jones stages a striking conception that makes electricity the source of Prospero’s powers. Retsina Cola channels the raw intimacy of rebetiko, a Greek urban music born from Asia Minor exile. The young quartet, composed of Alexios Koutsourelis (bouzouki and vocals), Giorgos Goudousakis (guitar and vocals), Melina Vasiliki Paraskevopoulou (percussion and vocals) and Ioannis Christakopoulos (accordion and vocals), blends plaintive melodies, driving rhythms and close vocal interplay. Their repertoire navigates longing, thwarted love and social struggle, stirred by oriental spices and smoky textures that evoke tavern nights and collective memory.
Veteran noise outfit Ramleh deliver an electric, rock-tinged set led by Gary Mundy on guitar, Stuart Dennison on drums, Anthony Di Franco on electric bass and Kevin Laska on synth. Their charged, abrasive sound blends distorted guitar, dense percussion and swirling electronics into a confrontational live experience. The evening continues with record selections by La Poya and Fuxy Lady, extending the event’s raw, underground energy.
Scène Vagabonde’s seventh edition brings a compact program of contemporary theatre and music, presenting three contrasting stage works — “Par le bout du nez”, “Quadrille” and “Prima facie” — alongside a concert by Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp as part of La Bâtie-Festival de Genève.
