Charivari — Citizen Action for Urban Heritage

Historian Leïla el-Wakil, author of Charivari, draws on her involvement with the citizen movement Contre l’enlaidissement de Genève (SOS Patrimoine CEG) and extensive field contact with local residents.

She examines recent struggles to protect built and tree heritage, investigates the uneven dynamics between politicians, administrations and vox populi, and connects these conflicts to accelerated urban densification and the wider concern of climate change, offering insights into civic mobilization and policy implications for heritage protection. Éclats! gathers leading francophone writers in short, staged confrontations that examine contemporary issues. Each evening pairs two authors — Giuliano Da Empoli and Hugo Micheron; Asma Mhalla and Hervé Le Tellier; Esther Teillard and Frédéric Beigbeder; Kamel Daoud and François‑Henri Désérable — in moderated discussions investigating global disorder, the ethics of AI, gender and style, and migration and storytelling. Artistic direction is by François‑Henri Désérable. Capacity is limited to 80 spectators per evening.

20 April – 7 June

Designed for emerging professionals and recent graduates, this workshop explores puppetry through the creation of a short performance. Four to five young artists are supported through a guided process from idea to stage, with mentorship in direction, dramaturgy and construction. Participants develop a compact work presented at a public work-in-progress showcase. The programme also offers the chance to win a fully funded four-week training placement in 2027 at Odradek, near Toulouse.

6 – 7 June

Bye Bye Binary, a typographic collective, develops inclusive non-binary writing systems and researches typographic practices. Their residency explores designing wooden type, experimental typefaces and printing techniques to question norms of written language.

This festival examines how language shapes perception, permeates political discourse and informs collective imaginaries. Through talks, creative workshops and poetic performances it investigates power and resistance in words, demonstrates ways language can be reinvented or subverted, and reveals implications for identity and social change.

Saturday 6 June, 14:00

Malandro, artist and illustrator, leads a practical workshop focused on observational sketching and illustration. He demonstrates quick-study techniques to capture form, gesture and mood with economy and expressiveness.

After a brief tour of the exhibition that inspired the session, participants explore cafés as motifs, practising composition, line work and shading. The workshop examines how simple marks can reveal atmosphere, social interaction and the character of everyday objects.

30 May & 6 June, 13:30

Ainhoa Cayuso, ceramic artist, leads the sculpting and painting sessions, while the NoOps association facilitates a hands-on dismantling workshop to source electronic components.

Across three linked workshops participants disassemble vintage devices, model them in self‑hardening clay, and apply colour to create sculptural memories. The programme examines material reuse, creative reuse of electronic detritus, and the cultural significance of tech nostalgia through practical making and discussion.
