Concepts as Weapons? Debates on ‘Swiss Democracies’ (16th–19th c.)

An academic workshop examining the conceptual history of democracy in Switzerland from the early modern period to the late nineteenth century, with a particular focus on the final third of the eighteenth century through 1874. It investigates how multiple conceptions of democracy, including assembly, representative and semi-direct forms, were assembled, negotiated and transformed amid foreign wars, internal conflicts and rising nationalism.

They discuss the atlas-like book that reworks historical documents into a fragmented narrative, exploring geographical imaginations, exoticism, and the potency of fiction. The talk examines maps, diagrams and vignettes as tools for constructing imagined worlds and offers close readings alongside archival maps and documents drawn from library collections.

This interactive memory challenge invites participants to test their memory while exploring practical ways to preserve biodiversity based on Geneva’s municipal strategy. Players match “before-and-after” images that illustrate individual and institutional actions, and each correct pair reveals concise information explaining the measure. The activity examines themes such as habitat restoration, species-friendly practices, urban greening and policy responses, helping participants understand the impact and rationale behind everyday and organisational conservation choices.

28 January – 23 December

This workshop explores the traditional process of assembling a herbarium specimen, inspired by Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s collections. Participants learn scientific techniques for pressing and mounting dried plants on old paper, practice botanical labelling and nomenclature, and select specimens to create a personal herbarium sheet. The session examines preservation methods, identification principles and the historical context of Rousseau’s approach, combining practical skills with scientific insight to produce a lasting botanical object.

This meeting explores the creative process behind the triptych focused on collective struggles, providing insight into staging choices, collaborative research methods, and the thematic construction of the work, while also examining the artistic strategies used to represent collective action and the intersections between music, text, and performance.

This audio exploration navigates the history and urban imaginaries of the Servette quarter, tracing how Geneva and its natural environment have shaped one another. Drawing on archival stories and vivid images — from ubiquitous seagulls to imagined mammoths and an era before the Salève existed — the series examines changing perceptions of landscape, memory, and urban identity, and investigates how myths and material change inform contemporary relationships with place.
