Watches and Wonders Geneva: The Montreux Jazz Club settles in Geneva for a temporary residency.
The spirit of the Montreux Jazz Festival takes over Geneva as part of the “In The City” program of the Watches and Wonders Geneva watch show. For five consecutive evenings, a pop-up Montreux Jazz Club will open its doors at Quai du Général-Guisan to offer a free, intimate, immersive musical experience.
Directed by Joël Pommerat, this new creation imagines the encounter of two very young girls who defy the laws of the real world and adult authority to preserve their pact of friendship. Positioned between theatre and novel, the piece combines grave and naive episodes, where the supernatural becomes a means to confront inconceivable realities. “Submersion Games” by Bryan Campbell at Maison Saint-Gervais is a performance drawing inspiration from the novel Moby Dick. It intertwines themes of eroticism, ecocide violence, and sado-masochistic rituals, delving into the desires and sufferings present in our relationships with work, sexuality, and the natural world. The piece immerses the audience in a maritime experience.
Reunited after more than twenty years, Satoko Fujii’s quartet returns with a thunderous blend of avant-rock and free jazz. Fujii’s mercurial compositions drive spontaneous exchanges between her piano, Natsuki Tamara’s eruptive trumpet, Tatsuya Yoshida’s propulsive drumming and Takeharu Hayakawa’s grounded double bass. The ensemble navigates volatile textures, abrupt shifts and ecstatic grooves, channeling raw energy into collective improvisation and an unpredictable emotional arc.
