Through screenings, talks and encounters, the festival offers a space to discover new talents and reassess cinematic traditions, celebrating cross-cultural dialogues and the emotional power of film.

UNIGE x Animatou: La passion Van Gogh

Tabarak Allah Allas’s film is the first feature-length motion picture entirely hand-painted in the style of Vincent van Gogh. Using a painterly animation approach, it stages a singular encounter between cinema and painting. After Van Gogh’s death, a young man investigates the circumstances of his disappearance by meeting those who knew the painter. Beyond biography, the film meditates on artistic creation, perception and how an artwork continues to live after its author, revisiting the artist’s life through his canvases.

English and Polish with French subtitles.

Preceded by Mawtini (2024, 13′), Allah Tabarak Allas, in the presence of the director.
Screening in collaboration with the Animatou festival.

Ciel Sourdeau’s eight-minute, seventeen-second video unfolds as a subversive tutorial: part gore, part experimental film, it repurposes pedagogical forms into an improvised, transgressive bricolage. Mixed by Adrien Kessler, the piece layers tactile sound and rough-edged visuals to probe bodies, identity and the limits of instruction. Its stripped, confrontational aesthetic alternates shock and dark humour, inviting a re-examination of learning rituals and the politics of representation through intimate, unsettling imagery.

An intimate retrospective devoted to director Patricia Plattner, presenting a selection of her films alongside a reading-performance and a small exhibition. Plattner’s cinema favors close human encounters and observational compositions, blending subtle humour with poignant emotional truth. The programme highlights her attentive direction and narrative economy, tracing recurring themes of identity, everyday intimacy and the passage of time. Screenings offer a chance to rediscover the quiet intensity and warm, lyrical realism of her work. An event presented by the association Le Bazar de la Sirène in collaboration with Luna Films and the City of Carouge.

Lush compositions, theatrical performances and rhythmic montage create a sensorial, dreamlike experience that foregrounds heritage and identity. The Color of Pomegranates remains a visually radical testament to cinematic poetry and the transformative power of metaphor.

Giulio Regeni, Tutto il male del mondo reconstructs the judicial truth behind the abduction, torture and murder of Italian researcher Giulio Regeni near Cairo in February 2016. This investigative documentary pieces together legal findings, testimony and archival material to trace the case’s painstaking unraveling, offering a sober, forensic cinematic approach. The film’s tone is restrained yet urgent, foregrounding human loss and the pursuit of justice. Original Italian audio with English subtitles.

Special screening in partnership with Amnesty International and in collaboration with the Geneva section of the Partito Democratico and ANPI – Associazione Nazionale Partigiani d’Italia.
