Special Screening: Queen Kelly

Erich von Stroheim’s Queen Kelly is a haunting fragment of silent cinema, carried by Gloria Swanson’s magnetic presence. Set in an imagined European kingdom, the film unfolds around Queen Regine’s arranged marriage and the sudden appearance of Kelly, a young novice whose arrival shifts the story toward desire, power, and forbidden fascination. Long left incomplete after clashes between director and production, it is now seen in a reconstructed version assembled from restored 1928-1929 footage, preserving both its grandeur and its unresolved beauty.

Ridley Scott’s 1982 Blade Runner plunges into a rain-drenched, neon metropolis where bounty hunter Rick Deckard tracks synthetic replicants. The film’s measured pacing and lingering frames foreground questions of identity, memory and empathy, probing what separates human from artificial life. Dense, noir-inflected visuals and a melancholic atmosphere give the story an elegiac tone, balancing tense encounters with reflective solitude. Its interrogation of consciousness and longing lingers long after the credits.
