Between 2022 and 2023, Argentine director and playwright Lola Arias immersed herself in the prison system of Buenos Aires, meeting women and transgender individuals convicted of drug trafficking. This experience led to the creation of a film, REAS, which will be presented at the 2024 Berlinale, as well as the theatrical production Los días afuera (The Days Outside). The show blends theater, live-filmed footage, archival images, music, dance, and song, presenting a reimagined Broadway-style musical. Straddling the line between documentary and fiction, the performance gives voice to six former prisoners—Noelia, Estefania, Paula, Yoseli, Ignacio, and Carla—who share their stories of incarceration, dreams, failures, and their desire to reclaim their destinies through music, while imagining new futures for themselves.
