Schumann – Love with a Capital L
This concert explores the passionate and dramatic love story between composer Robert Schumann and his wife Clara Wieck, framed by Schumann’s music and their personal letters. The performance, conducted by Raphaël Merlin, features pianist Audrey Vigoureux and cellist Christian-Pierre La Marca, with actors Caroline Cons and Loup-Denis Elion (known as Cédric from Scènes de ménages) reading excerpts from the couple’s letters.
The program includes a beautiful piece for cello and orchestra, with La Marca’s warm, expressive playing, and Vigoureux performing the Romanze, the slow movement of Clara’s concerto, written during the height of their love. The concert also touches on the tragic end of Schumann’s life, marked by his descent into madness and a failed suicide attempt, which ended both his creative vitality and his life with Clara.
