Benjamin Appl, a German baritone, will present a recital with pianist James Baillieu, featuring songs by Gustav Mahler, Alma Mahler, George Butterworth, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, and other composers. The program centers around Mahler’s world, with highlights including Rückert Lieder and Urlicht from Des Knaben Wunderhorn. It also includes George Butterworth’s Six Songs from ‘A Shropshire Lad’, a cycle that resonates with the tragic story of Butterworth’s death in World War I. The recital will explore the connections between Mahler and lesser-known composers, including those who perished in Theresienstadt. Appl, known for his dramatic interpretations, brings a poignant depth to the program, marking his third recital at the Grand Théâtre.
