An American in Paris

The musical “An American in Paris,” featuring music and lyrics by George and Ira Gershwin, makes its Swiss debut in Geneva. Directed by Wayne Marshall and staged by Christopher Wheeldon, the show unfolds the tale of three artists enamored with the same muse in post-war bohemian Paris. Following its phenomenal success on Broadway and in London, the talented cast performs accompanied by the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, promising a spectacular end of year with dazzling choreography and a Broadway ambiance.

The Cathedral of Geneva features three cantatas from J.S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, performed by the Ensemble Vocal Pierre de Lune and the Ensemble Instrumental Romand under Emmanuel Junod’s direction. Cantatas No. I, III, and VI depict the birth of Jesus, the adoration of the shepherds, and the visit of the Magi. Conductor Roberto Sawicki leads the Lancy-Geneva Orchestra in a warm, orange-and-cinnamon scented Christmas programme celebrating the ensemble’s 50th anniversary. Three soloists — Madoka Sakitsu-Lapeyre (violin), Kamil Mukhametdinov (cello) and organist Jean-Christophe Orange — alternate luminous, spiritual repertoire that spans baroque and classical textures. From Vivaldi’s virtuosic Winter and Heinichen’s Pastorale to Bach chorale echoes and Mozart sonatas and divertimento, the evening unfolds with radiant sonorities and fresh, intimate interplay between organ, strings and orchestra.

11 – 21 December

Alexandre Païta presents the final piece of Lorca’s dramatic trilogy, “Blood Wedding”. This poignant and visually stunning drama portrays Andalusian peasantry through the tale of a bride who elopes with her former lover on her wedding day. Themes of honor, possession, passion, and rivalry intertwine beneath a moon symbolizing death. The play exalts the quest for freedom and love until death, set against a backdrop of scorching landscapes and wounded hearts.

Jennifer Merlyn Scherler invites you to the Death Café, a gathering inspired by Tokyo’s Maid cafés, featuring the recurring character Hadès. This haunted setting offers a delicate yet unsettling experience centered on mourning and memory, with lip-sync performances and discussions about departed friends, among other elements. Blurring the lines between fiction and reality, kawaii and the macabre, this performance provides an ironic and sensitive meditation on loss and emotional connections. The event is part of the Side Quest for the Real exhibition program.

16 – 21 December

Yvette Théraulaz and Lee Maddeford return with “Le Chemin,” a musical performance that traces a journey filled with doubt, poetry, and tenderness. Through memories, texts, and songs, Yvette Théraulaz shares her artistic path marked by rebellion and a fight against injustice. As the 2013 recipient of the Hans-Reinhart Ring, she is joined by Lee Maddeford, a pianist and vocal enthusiast, to celebrate over twenty years of collaboration in this heartfelt performance.
