A World Paved with Surprises

Michelle Bucher (UNIGE) is affiliated with the University of Geneva and researches mathematical tilings and geometric patterns, linking historical craft practices with contemporary mathematics.

This lecture examines what a tiling is, tracing their journey from Alhambra mosaics to Escher and twentieth-century breakthroughs such as the impossibility of regular pentagon tilings and Penrose’s aperiodic patterns. It explores the interplay of order and disorder and reveals connections between geometry, art and material science.
