The second, led by Anne‑Frédérique Schläpfer, presents the commemorative issue on the livre pauvre in dialogue with Daniel Leuwers, Jonathan Wenger and Natacha Allet. Participants may bring photographs, objects or documents, or simply listen and exchange. Through storytelling, collective drawing, collage and text-making, the workshop explores how everyday memories shape local identity and spatial knowledge and reveals connections between personal narratives and urban change.

Mathias Énard, award-winning novelist and essayist, presents Hôtel Balkan, a reflective narrative that follows a canoe journey along the Sèvre and traces memories linked to the history of the Balkans. Énard examines memory, literary influences—from Proust to Danilo Kiš—and the enduring presence of a youthful love encountered in Sarajevo. This lecture investigates how personal travel, historical portraiture and literary allusion intertwine to illuminate broader cultural and emotional landscapes.

Philippe Charlier, forensic physician and anthropologist and research director at the Musée du quai Branly, draws on fieldwork in Africa and the Caribbean to investigate vodou cosmologies. Following the justicial divinity Heviosso, the egungun dances of Benin and the spirit flight with zombies in Haiti, he examines the circulating metaphysics of vodou, where gestures are meaningful and disease and death are rarely considered merely natural. Charlier presents powerful funeral rituals and the role of intermediaries between the living, souls and ancestors.
