Located in Eaux-Vives, Les Scala is an esteemed independent cinematic landmark in Geneva’s cultural tapestry. Established in 1949 and recently renovated, the cinema boasts three screening rooms. Les Scala’s programming is diverse and always in original versions with French subtitles. Additionally, to cater to Geneva’s international community, the cinema offers select screenings with English subtitles. Beyond its regular programming, Les Scala hosts premieres, screenings in the presence of film teams, and collaborates with various Geneva cultural festivals.
Directors Stéphane Goël and Mehdi Atmani undertake an intimate, observational road movie that interrogates Swiss neutrality through personal friendship and travel. Following two sons—one of a Vaud farmer, the other of a naturalized Kabyle fisherman—the film wanders across borders and memories as Europe’s tensions loom. It balances wry intimacy and melancholy, mixing textured landscapes, candid close-ups and a quietly questioning voice. A quirky, reflective identity quest that explores belonging, national conscience and the fragile limits of being ‘neutral.’
