Bibliothèque du Musée d'ethnographie de Genève (MEG)

The MEG Library houses an extensive collection focused on social and cultural anthropology. In addition to books and periodicals, it offers a variety of multimedia resources, including DVDs, CDs, comics, and children’s books, all tied to the museum’s collection. The library also preserves sound archives accessible through its phonotheque and features a 12-seat cinema for viewing ethnographic films. It occasionally hosts talks and events organized by the museum.

Family visit to discover an aspect of the MEG permanent exhibition.

As part of the “Partir en livres” programme, whose theme for this summer is “Animals and us”, let’s discover the gifts given by all the animals of the Arctic on the occasion of Koulou’s birth. After looking at the Inuit objects in the permanent exhibition, let’s listen to Koulou’s poem in the music room of the library. The visit will end with listening to Inuit sounds.

Wednesday 16 July, 15:00

As part of the “Partir en livres” program, a family visit will explore the rich collections of the MEG (Museum of Ethnography), focusing on the theme “Animals and us.” The Topino family and their travelling circus, guided by Bisha, the blue goat, will be introduced. The visit includes a look at the three-stringed fiddle in the permanent exhibition, followed by a discovery of Bisha’s story in the library’s music room. The experience concludes with a song by the band Aksak.

As part of the “Partir en livres” program, whose theme this summer is “Animals and us”, let’s find out whether Saphir, the Hérens cow, will win her fierce battle with Lionne? After discovering Valais cow culture in the permanent exhibition, let’s listen to Saphir’s story in the library’s music room. The visit ends with the sound of a mountain yodel.

Wednesday 17 September, 15:00

Join a family tour to explore the library and temporary exhibition at MEG, focused on the story of Bama. Once mistreated, Bama unlocks the secret of the sanza, a musical instrument, to win everyone’s affection. After viewing the sanza, Bama’s tale will be narrated, enriched by the instrument’s music.

Thursday 2 October, 12:00

In his 2024 book, Angelo Dan delves into the restitution of French cultural assets taken during the conquest of the Kingdom of Dahomey. Angelo Dan, serving as ambassador and deputy representative of the Republic of Benin in France, will lead this conference. Reservations must be made via email (biblio.meg@geneve.ch).
