Meddahates – Echoes & Traces

Created and performed by Leila Moon, this audiovisual piece investigates the nearly forgotten meddahates, a women-led musical and narrative practice from Algeria. Drawing on Moon’s Deep Dive into Meddahates research — field interviews and archival recordings — the performance interweaves sung material and oral narration with electronic textures.

The work foregrounds memory, communal storytelling and acts of resistance, offering an intimate, archival atmosphere that bridges past and present while highlighting female voices and cultural transmission.

Are Demons Among Us? Berbiguier de Terre-Neuve du Thym was a French citizen from Avignon who, after having his cards read by a fortune-teller, began to see malevolent beings all around him, whom he called “goblins.” The delusion lasted his entire life. His book on demons is an impressively detailed work, written in a rich literary style and containing utterly bizarre content—both pathetic and unintentionally comical.

It constitutes the most complete account of the inner world of a man gripped by profound madness. It was rediscovered in the following century by the Surrealists, notably Raymond Queneau, as well as by enthusiasts of outsider art. The performance will be a montage of the very words of this famous “literary madman” and will offer the audience a journey into the labyrinth of his thoughts.

Created collectively with SCÈNE ACTIVE, this all-ages performance was devised by around forty young people facing school dropout, guided by a professional artistic team. The Season XI ensemble crafted a fantastical fable exploring friendship, bereavement, addiction, imposed norms, acceptance of difference and consent. Staged in a rich, imaginative world, displaced characters — a demon among mermaids, a princess and a pirate among fairies, a guardian of the fairies in the castle of the Underworld — confront an army of demons as they seek a way home.
