Humanitarianism from Below? Universalism and the Politics of Inhumanity

Till Mostowlansky, anthropologist at the Geneva Graduate Institute, presents the edited volume Humanitarianism from Below? with contributions from Alexander Ephrussi. Discussant Prof. Davide Rodogno joins the conversation.

Drawing on ethnographic and historical research, the seminar examines alternative and often overlooked forms of humanitarianism worldwide, interrogating assumptions of universalism and assessing their effects on global aid practices. The discussion highlights local initiatives, moral economies, and the political stakes of defining humanitarian worth.

New Governance Models for Equal Practices

This participatory workshop tests three governance models: hierarchy, top-sharing and shared governance in small teams. Participants play three structured exercises to observe how decision-making, power distribution and group dynamics affect equality and inclusion. After each game the group debriefs to analyze consequences for communication, agency and collective responsibility, and to draw practical insights for adapting governance in organizations. The session encourages critical reflection and comparative analysis of models.

Claire Rufenacht, dance therapist, is joined by dancer Pedro Ratto and cultural mediator Murielle Brunschwig, who offer complementary approaches to movement and cultural mediation.

These therapeutic workshops combine Argentine tango with adapted movement exercises for people with neurological conditions (Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, post-stroke and other movement disorders) and their caregivers. The sessions explore balance, rhythm and social engagement, examining how dance can support mobility, communication and emotional well-being.

This workshop explores the traditional process of assembling a herbarium specimen, inspired by Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s collections. Participants learn scientific techniques for pressing and mounting dried plants on old paper, practice botanical labelling and nomenclature, and select specimens to create a personal herbarium sheet. The session examines preservation methods, identification principles and the historical context of Rousseau’s approach, combining practical skills with scientific insight to produce a lasting botanical object.
