Pelléas & Mélisande by Claude Debussy

Claude Debussy’s opera “Pelléas & Mélisande,” based on Maurice Maeterlinck’s libretto, makes its return to Geneva following its initial streamed staging in 2021. This production, a collaboration with Opera Ballet Vlaanderen and Les Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg, showcases the creative talents of directors and choreographers Damien Jalet and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, with visual artist Marina Abramović contributing her artistic touch. Juraj Valčuha conducts the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, while the costumes are crafted by Iris van Herpen. Sung in French with subtitles, the opera delves into a symbolist drama focusing on hidden emotions and unseen energies, heightened by performances from the dancers of the Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève.

Stéphane Jaubertie’s script is powerful and contemporary, crafting a disturbingly mesmerizing human tableau. The production has been awarded the first regional prize from Rhône-Alpes at the FESTHEA festival and closed the Avignon IF festival.

Jeanne Spaeter introduces a unique concept: a romantic relationship structured by a contract with 14 clauses and a trial period of 365 days. Documented and shared on Instagram with the hashtag #relationamoureusedequalité, the project features Mike, the chosen candidate. On stage, the audience participates by selecting objects, asking questions, voting, and sharing laughs. This performance challenges perceptions of love while providing entertainment.

Drawing from her experience in the funeral industry, Aurélia Lüscher presents a documentary art installation that questions Western funeral rituals, our relationship with decomposition and nature, and the commercialization of death. This thoughtful and humor-infused approach delves into our connection with life and death.

10 – 13 September

Zizi Zozio is a performance by Marvin M’Toumo, an artist and designer trained in Nice and Geneva, that merges theater, fashion, and poetry. It reflects on his childhood in Guadeloupe and a dream of living among pelicans. The performer embodies a bird adorned with feathers, addressing themes of violence, sexuality, memory, and survival through a blend of storytelling, breath, cries, and song. Through this hybrid character, he authentically explores issues of gender and race, using art as a space for questioning and reconciliation.

11 – 13 September

Spanish choreographer Tamara Alegre brings together dancers and Jamaican DJs at the Pavillon for an unrestrained and festive celebration of dancehall. Originating from the vibrant neighborhoods of Kingston, this cultural and political movement will be represented by Dynamic Legends, Happy Feet, Miss Rose, Shanky Equanoxx, and DJ Pappi. Through their music and dance, they will express joy, anger, and pride, turning the stage into a lively and unifying dance floor.
