Guided Tour: Mechanical Music

MAH
Free, Booking Required

Join a guided tour of the exhibition led by a historian, offering unique insights and perspectives.

The exhibition “Musique mécanique” offers visitors the chance to experience the wonder of the melodies created by music boxes. Sounds, silences, percussion and mechanical noises evoke emotions and memories, evoking the prestige enjoyed by mechanical music in 19th-century salons. It will also highlight the birth of the music box in Geneva, in line with late 18th-century watchmaking production from small format to large volume, which is now enjoying an era of revival.

Delphine Reist and Laurent Faulon transform Villa Bernasconi with an immersive exhibition that returns each room to its original function. Through object-based artworks, automatons, accumulations, and scale shifts, they craft an atmosphere of eeriness and unease. Faulon converts the villa into an ambiguous space, while Reist examines alienating work practices. Their works engage in a dialogue on private, social, and political themes. The exhibition is accompanied by a variety of events, including tours, performances, readings, lectures, and workshops for children.

16 April – 20 July

The Chinese Women exhibition explores various aspects of women’s lives in Chinese culture through a selection of works highlighting their condition and the tensions associated with it. It begins by examining the traditional representation of women in art, from the funerary sculptures of the Tang dynasty to portraits of mature wives from the Qing dynasty. The exhibition also looks at the idealized image of the Chinese woman in Europe, spread through export porcelain and chinoiseries by artists like Watteau and Boucher. It further addresses themes such as marriage, female ornaments, foot binding, and protective female deities, concluding with the stories of Chinese women artists, from Dong Xiaowan to Peng Wei. The exhibition includes contributions from the Musée Ariana, the Museum of Art and History, the Ethnography Museum of Geneva, and the Rietberg Museum of Zurich.
