Director Germinal Roaux offers a meditative and lyrical portrait set in a forgotten Yucatán village, where Lena, a 68-year-old widow weakened by illness, meets Leon, a 62-year-old Maya guardian of nature and its spirits. Their unlikely companionship unfolds through quiet, sensory frames that favor textures of landscape and ritual over exposition. The film is a philosophical fable about ageing, the silent transformations of the body and heart, and the fragile, enduring ties that bind humans to one another and to the natural world.

A spring cycle from the Geneva University Film Club marks the 150th anniversary of UNIGE’s Faculty of Medicine, gathering ten films that probe medicine’s moral and emotional terrain. From Alfred Hitchcock’s psychoanalytic intrigue to Ingmar Bergman’s introspective intensity and David Cronenberg’s clinical horror, the program sketches portraits of doctors, caregivers and patients: dream-work, ethical dilemmas, bodily fragility and devoted care. Shot in textures from dreamlike chiaroscuro to clinical close-ups, the films balance unease and tenderness with exacting cinematic rhythms.

The film offers a poignant portrait of resilience and identity, revealing a paradoxical America seen through one man’s subtle, humane perspective.

Alain Martin’s documentary unfolds as a letter to his grandfather, returning to the US occupation of Haiti with a personal, investigative eye. Interweaving intimate memories and sweeping historical context, the film traces a paradox: how an aspirational embrace of American power shaped both an individual’s longing and a nation’s turmoil. Through textured, reflective framing, it explores exile, love, and the uncomfortable truths at the heart of freedom, balancing archival detail and personal testimony to provoke thoughtful examination rather than easy answers.

A discussion with the documentary-maker, Alain Martin, will take place after the screening.

Danielle Arbid’s Seuls les rebelles observes an unexpected love in a Beirut on the brink. Her intimate, observational approach frames Suzanne, a sixty-something Lebanese widow of Palestinian origin, and Osmane, a young Sudanese undocumented migrant, as their fragile bond ignites amid social collapse. The film probes migration, age, identity and solidarity through textured close-ups, saturated color passages and a patient rhythm. Presented at the Berlin Festival 2026, it balances political urgency with moments of tenderness, resisting dehumanization while honoring human agency.

This event is organized in partnership with the Geneva-based association CHANCE International, which actively supports the treatment of children with cancer, primarily in Lebanon, as well as targeted research projects, particularly on the genetic causes of cancer. Every donation gives a child with cancer a chance of recovery.
