Hazara Blues: A Graphic Novel Conversation

Reza Sahibdad, author born in 1980 in Mashhad and a member of the Hazara community, and illustrator Yann Damezin bring the graphic novel to life through testimony and images.

This conversation examines Sahibdad’s migratory journey from Iran/Afghanistan as a Hazara, addressing exclusion, racial prejudice, camp settlements around Stalingrad and his asylum claim. Through illustrated testimony, it explores identity, belonging and the role of graphic narrative in documenting migration and exposing systemic racism.

A screening of the documentary Facing War, offering rare access to the inner workings of NATO as the war in Ukraine reshapes the global balance, followed by a timely debate asking: Is Europe at war? Evelyne Brügger, a certified art therapist, leads the workshops with support from Joëlle Mauris, a professional cellist whose music accompanies one session per cycle.

The sessions explore creative practices to support women living with endometriosis, PMS or menstrual pain, addressing emotional expression, body awareness and coping strategies. Participants investigate materials and processes to rediscover inner resources, share experiences, and develop ways to express and regulate sensations through art and sound.

Since 2003, FIFDH has combined cinema with the promotion of human rights, presenting socially conscious films alongside debates and discussions that engage activists, journalists, artists, diplomats, and the public. Held across multiple venues in Geneva, including the UN, theaters, museums, and hospitals, the festival showcases feature films and documentaries that highlight human rights struggles worldwide, encouraging dialogue, reflection, and action. FIFDH has welcomed Nobel laureates, renowned filmmakers, and leading voices in activism, making it a unique platform where art and advocacy intersect.

A screening of the documentary The Librarians, which exposes the large-scale removal of books and the culture war unfolding in the United States, followed by a hard-hitting debate on America’s authoritarian drift. From the erosion of civil liberties to the undermining of democratic institutions and the global export of these practices, experts and activists examine how recent U.S. policies are reshaping power at home and beyond.

Saturday 7 March, 13:00

This workshop advances the nursery’s restoration project, moving from pruning to a planting phase with new species introduced to enrich the site’s plant diversity. Participants will take part in hands-on planting tasks, learn about species selection and ecological benefits, and contribute to habitat enhancement. The session emphasizes ecological resilience, soil preparation techniques, and long-term stewardship.

This workshop explores the traditional process of assembling a herbarium specimen, inspired by Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s collections. Participants learn scientific techniques for pressing and mounting dried plants on old paper, practice botanical labelling and nomenclature, and select specimens to create a personal herbarium sheet. The session examines preservation methods, identification principles and the historical context of Rousseau’s approach, combining practical skills with scientific insight to produce a lasting botanical object.
