FIFDH – Geneva International Film and Forum Festival on Human Rights

Since 2003, FIFDH has combined cinema with the promotion of human rights, presenting socially conscious films alongside debates and discussions that engage activists, journalists, artists, diplomats, and the public. Held across multiple venues in Geneva, including the UN, theaters, museums, and hospitals, the festival showcases feature films and documentaries that highlight human rights struggles worldwide, encouraging dialogue, reflection, and action. 19 – 24 January

Director and scenographer Fabrizio Montecchi, former director of Gioco Vita and coordinator of the Animateria programme, leads a professional workshop investigating shadow theatre as a fully-fledged artistic language. The sessions begin with technical and dramaturgical fundamentals, then invite participants to develop original sequences that prioritise sensitivity and poetic imagery. The programme emphasises practical experimentation, spatial composition and narrative invention, aiming to expand participants’ expressive vocabulary.

Lionel Shriver, award-winning American novelist and journalist, is best known for We Need to Talk About Kevin and other widely translated works. Interviewed by Kasmira Jefford, she discusses her latest novel Mania, exploring a bleak but witty vision of a society where intellectual merit becomes heresy. The conversation examines themes of social conformity, cultural panic and the role of provocative fiction in public debate. Shriver’s sharp intelligence and journalistic perspective illuminate the book’s moral provocations.

The lecture will be preceded by an apéritif at 18:30, offering a convivial start to the evening.

The Black Movie International Independent Film Festival returns for its 27th edition, opening the cultural year with around a hundred bold and independent films from Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe. Featuring both feature-length and short films for adults and children alike, the festival showcases contemporary cinema beyond the mainstream, offering a vibrant journey through today’s most daring international creations.

Presented by the Grave’Side Family association, De Thônex à Madagascar chronicles a year of local mobilisation and a solidarity trip to Ambohimanatrika. In September 2025 fifteen young people from Thônex travelled to Madagascar to help build a village water network. The film follows their collective effort with documentary immediacy, intimate portraits and a focus on youth-driven commitment. It explores themes of solidarity, responsibility and cross-cultural exchange, rendered in a warm, humanist register that highlights labour, landscape and the emotional bonds formed along the journey.
