As part of the lecture series L’art italien et Genève (2025–2026), prof. Grégoire Extermann will explore the work of Antonio Canova (1757–1822), the Venetian sculptor and painter who became a central figure of neoclassical sculpture in Rome.
Focusing on his celebrated group Vénus et Adonis, acquired by Genevan collector Guillaume Favre for the Villa La Grange (today at the MAH), the lecture will highlight how Canova’s heroic reinterpretations of antiquity shaped European art and resonated in Geneva’s cultural history.
