Screening & Discussion: Durakovo, le village des fous

Mikhail Morozov, a Russian businessman and former member of the secret services, has created in the village of Durakovo a re-education centre for young people who want to (or must) “get back on the right track.” The initiative is supported by part of the Orthodox Church, as well as by parliamentarians and military officers. The micro-history of Durakovo reveals the emergence of a paradoxical fusion between the glorification of the Soviet past, a return to Orthodox spirituality, and the rise of Russian nationalism. It offers a sharp insight into the conservative revolution that has underpinned the hardening of Vladimir Putin’s regime since 2012 and led to the invasion of Ukraine.

Screening and discussion moderated by Jean Perret, critic, with filmmaker Nino Kirtadzé in attendance.
