The city expands beyond its medieval and modern walls in the 19th century. It takes over the land of old fortifications, connecting them with the existing buildings, and then spreads into the surrounding suburban, rural, and agricultural territories. How is this spatial development conceptualized, and how does it manifest in the social reconfiguration of the city and its emerging peripheries? Can this expansion happen without transforming transportation systems and administrative territorial reconfigurations? Can these changes be compared to the “utopias” of new cities created in the second half of the 20th century? Moderated by Irène Herrmann (Université de Genève). The program is in partnership with the Haute école de musique, whose students will provide a musical welcome at 6:00 PM.
