The European Bear: A Cultural History, by Michel Pastoureau

Michel Pastoureau, specialist in the cultural history of animals in Europe, draws on decades of research into the bear’s symbolic roles.

He examines how the bear moved from sacred ancestor and ‘king’ status to a demonized and ridiculed figure under Christian influence, later becoming a popular children’s toy in the twentieth century, revealing broader shifts in belief, power and cultural values.
