The Art of Gardens According to Rousseau, Girardin, Goethe, and Chateaubriand

In the 18th century, the formal French garden was challenged by the more naturalistic English garden. Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s novel “La Nouvelle Héloïse,” published in 1761, significantly impacted garden design. This talk, led by Jacques Berchtold, a Geneva-based professor and writer, will delve into Rousseau’s influence on the gardens of the Marquis de Girardin, Goethe, and Chateaubriand.
