Stabat Mater by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi will be presented at the Grand Théâtre de Genève in a new production, directed by Romeo Castellucci and conducted by Barbara Hannigan. This unique performance, centered around the figure of Mary and her suffering at the crucifixion of Jesus, will take place in the Saint-Pierre Cathedral. The work, originally composed in 1736, will be paired with Giacinto Scelsi’s Quattro Pezzi (su una nota sola) and Three Latin Prayers, bringing a modern, minimalistic twist to the sacred music.

The performance features soprano Barbara Hannigan and countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński, with the ensembles Il Pomo d’Oro and Contrechamps. Castellucci, known for his symbolic and visual approach to theatre, will create a striking, ritualistic atmosphere, blending baroque and contemporary music in a deeply evocative experience. This collaboration, in coproduction with Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, and Dutch National Opera, will offer a profound exploration of the religious and emotional themes in Stabat Mater.

The play “Les cinq roses de Jennifer” explores the solitude and struggle of an individual against dominant discourse. It tells the story of Jennifer, a romantically inclined femminiello, who awaits the eagerly anticipated call from Franco after an unforgettable night together. Each day, she dedicates a song to him while living under the threat of a serial killer targeting transvestites in her 1980s Naples neighborhood. Though seemingly light-hearted, the play powerfully portrays the outsider’s condition and the despair of hiding in order to be accepted. Translated and directed by Daniela Morina Pelaggi, the production is supported by a talented artistic and technical team, and it marks its world premiere in French under the banner of Compagnie Daï Daï Produçao.
