Interview conducted by Alexandre Demidoff, culture journalist at Le Temps.
Born in 1976, Christophe Bigot is a graduate of the École Normale Supérieure and holds an agrégation in modern literature. He currently teaches at the prestigious Lycée Louis-le-Grand. He has written two novels published by Gallimard: L’Archange et le procureur (2008), which won five awards, including the Prix Mottart from the Académie Française and the Prix Océanes for historical and adventure novels, and L’Hystéricon (2010), reflecting his strong interest in the French Revolution and the 19th century.
His latest novel, Un autre m’attend ailleurs (La Martinière, 2024), explores the final love affair of Marguerite Yourcenar with a young American photographer, a relationship that reminded her of Antinous, the emperor’s favorite in The Memoirs of Hadrian. This true-to-life novel, a finalist for the Prix Femina 2024, focuses on the passionate relationship between Marguerite Yourcenar, the first woman to join the Académie Française, and Jerry Wilson, 46 years her junior. Despite their stark differences, their love story is powerfully told.
