At the crossroads of dance and concert, this hybrid performance offers a powerful, contemporary reinterpretation of 19th-century fado dance. Nine dancers, musicians, and singers combine their talents for an irreverent tribute. Bate Fado transports the audience to 19th-century Lisbon, exploring the choreographic roots of fado. Similar to tap dancing, this percussive and sensual dance interacts with voice and music. However, both religion and dictatorship frowned upon its freedom and eroticism, leading to its censorship and eventual disappearance. Two centuries later, four dancers, four musicians, and a singer revive the fado flame, daring to parody and break the traditional, masculine image of the fado performer, creating a neo-fado by deconstructing its past.
